Earthquake

Hi sifters,

One of New Zealand's cities (Christchurch) suffered a major earthquake yesterday. There are various places you can find out more information (tvnz.co.nz, stuff.co.nz, eq.org.nz, geonet.org.nz, canterburyearthquake.org.nz), but if you would like to make a donation to help, you can do so very easily here: http://www.1-dayout.co.nz/products/1O113EB8A

Thanks,
Freaked-out-NZ-sifter.

It takes 3 power points to frontpage a Sift Talk or blog post, which I don't have. However I will *promote it, and throw in a *quality for good measure.

I hope you and your friends and family are safe, bert. Take care. >> ^berticus:

why can't i frontpage.. is that a two point trick? DAMN IT

I live in Wellington, north of Christchurch by about 300km (~190 miles), and we felt the quake here. I feel that it would be impertinent of me to try and do justice to what has happened to the city, given that I haven't directly experienced the devastation. All the footage I have seen has been horrific, except for the poignant shots of people being rescued from beneath rubble.

This is a picture of Christchurch moments after the quake hit: http://i.imgur.com/0vZbD.jpg

The ground acceleration was measured at the force of gravity. There are some truly impressive and terrifying pictures and videos of the destruction. The entire city is going to have to be rebuilt.

Glad you are OK. I'd be curious to hear more about your experience, if you've got the time.
